PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
As a parent, you hear it all the time, "Get involved in your child's learning... get involved in your child's school... get involved in your child's education..." But why should you get involved? How can you get involved? Research shows that when parents are involved in their child's education:
- students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents education level.
- students have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and complete homework more consistently.
- students have higher graduation rates and greater enrollment rates in post-secondary education.
- students behaviors, such as alcohol use, violence, and antisocial behavior decrease.
What is parental involvement ?
Parental involvement is the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring—
· that parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning;
· that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school;
* that parents are full partners in their child's education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child.
